My Facebook and Twitter Mini-Manifesto

Posted May 27, 2009 in Miscellany, Rants

With all this social networking going on, there’s always the welcome or unwelcome advice from experts and non-experts alike. The main theme everywhere lately: Keep your private sh*t to yourself; have a personal and business presence; and never the twain shall meet. So, have a private page on Facebook for your friends and a page for your business; a personal Twitter account and a business Twitter account.

Sure, if you’re a teacher or a top exec, you probably don’t want folks to see what you’re up to in your private life. You don’t want a parent or the new temp seeing you as you are. God forbid that happen! That said, I don’t “friend” indiscriminately—I must know you in some way. But I cry foul to the notion that this should be SOP (standard operating procedure).

If you have to hide yourself behind this division of person, fine. By all means. But I don’t want to. I don’t have to. I work in beer. I’m just saying: Adapt. Do what works for you. If your job is such a big part of you, there is no reason to separate the two. Surely, someone into beer doesn’t care when I tweet that we got delivery or my light bulb burnt out or the dog did something funny, but whatever. I’m Julie and I’m Bruisin’ Ales. And the two meet, quite often.

(DISCLAIMER: By the way, I am sooooooo a non-expert.)
