Happy Pi Day, everybody!

Yuppers, today is Pi Day. This “holiday”—a celebration for math freaks the world over—has become quite the hip thing. And how convenient, falling in between Square Root Day and St. Patrick’s Day. Eh, there’s something for everyone, right? I will be honest. I dislike math. (My mother always told me “hate” was too strong a word.) Truth be told, I loathe math. Y’know, “thinking” math with all those little signs and stuff. Ick. It makes my head explode. Jason, however, loves math. And he loves pie. (Especially pie from Picnic’s.) He probably likes Pi, too, but we’ve never talked about it. From the official site:
Pi is the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Pi = 3.1415926535… Pi Day is celebrated by math enthusiasts around the world on March 14th.
With the use of computers, Pi has been calculated to over 1 trillion digits past the decimal. Pi is an irrational number meaning it will continue infinitely without repeating. The symbol for Pi was first used in 1706 by William Jones, but was popular after it was adopted by the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler in 1737.
In honor of Pi Day, Asheville Pizza & Brewing (on Merrimon Ave.) is having a Pi Day Celebration from 12:00pm-3:00pm today, sponsored by the UNCA Math Club to “promote math literacy.” (Maybe I should go?) There will be a pie eating contest, Pi reciting contest, free math literacy games, and you can win food certificates for APBC! Get on down there!
