AB-InBev falls flat (on its face)
CNN reports that profits for the recently formed Anheuser-Busch InBev merger have dropped by 95%. Holy bejebus. With that news, you can pretty much expect another US brewery to close under them, causing more job losses. “Further savings would be made by cutting another $500 million from U.S. operations this year and in reducing overall capital spending by $1 billion.” Will the US rebel against the “Great American Lager?” 2,400 American jobs have already been lost from The Merger. Boo.
The UK probably wasn’t planning on this to happen
When the new PM added a gargantuan beer tax in 2008, bad things happened. “A record 2,000 British pubs have closed with the loss of 20,000 jobs since the chancellor, Alistair Darling, increased beer tax in the 2008 budget, new figures published by the British Beer and Pub Association reveal today. The figures came alongside a separate forecast by Oxford Economics that 75,000 more jobs in the drinks industry are at risk. The finding is based on the impact of last year’s 18% increase in excise duty and the implications of the four-year drinks tax escalator.” Many states in the US have proposed new beer taxes on the table. Let’s hope they read this, eh?
