Eat at Nine Mile, have great beer

Posted Feb 24, 2009 in Beer, Beer Pairings, Beer Places, Breweries, Coolness, Limited Release

Nine Mile, one of our favorite places to eat in Asheville, has offered-up their beer list. Impressive! We love their food, especially the Soon Come (which as it says, you just have to try it), and now there’s a great beer list to accompany the edibles. June also tells us that they expect to be “one of the first to offer Fat Tire on-tap” when it arrives. It makes us jump with glee to find a place with a decent beer list. We have so many great restaurants here, but many beer lists are sorely lacking.

(We edited the macros off the list, btw, but there are only four.)

Here’s what you can find there now:

Draft:
Foothills Sexual Chocolate Stout (holy cow!!)
Wedge Iron Rail IPA
Foothills People Porter

Extreme Beer Fest ’09

Extreme Beer Fest in Boston
One of our favorite festivals of the year, the Extreme Beer Fest sponsored by BeerAdvocate in Boston, is going on this weekend. All the heavy hitters are there: Sam Calagione, Tomme Arthur, Adam Avery, Jim Koch, Rob Tod, and others. You can follow the Allström Brothers on Twitter for updates.

Last night was Night of the Barrels, probably the one night of the year we are most jealous of other beer people. We’re ever-so-happy to see Foothills Brewing Co. sent something to the festival, Pappy Van Winkle Barrel Aged People’s Porter. Also, the Smuttynose barrel, Oak Aged Hanami
(tart Cherry Ale aged for 9 months in a Jack Daniels Barrel) is the special keg we’re getting for the tasting next week. Whee!

Just so you can salivate along with us, check out what was on the menu last night:

Zappa or no Zappa?

Posted in Beer, Breweries, Music, Not Coolness, People

Lagunitas to end the Zappa beer series? There’s been no official announcement yet, but a thread on BeerAdvocate says so, so it’s must be true! Ah, sarcasm.

We really have no idea. One BA comments: “…The story that I heard is that it had something to do with Lagunitas sending a bunch of free [Frank] Zappa beers to the funeral party of recently deceased Mother of Invention; Jimmy Carl Black (died about three or four months ago). Apparently JCB had sued Zappa at some point in their lives and left bad feelings with the family. So when it got back to the family, they just pulled the plug on the Lagunitas beers. Of course, this story may be some shade of the truth like a game of telephone, but how would anybody at Lagunitas even know about something like that?”

Now, we wait to see how this all works out. We only got a few of the series in-store by the time Lagunitas rolled into town, but they’ve been insanely popular. Ruben & The Jets, the most recent release, was a particularly good brew. We’ll be sad if it’s true, but to make you feel better, Baltimore declared December 21 “Frank Zappa Day.” Oh, let’s not forget that Hop Stoopid is soon coming!

Hooray, the Beer List is finally up to date!

Things are Hoppin’ around here

Posted in Beer, Beer Awards, Breweries, New this week

Oh, man. Tomorrow is going to be such a happy day at Bruisin’ Ales. Because tomorrow, we’re getting our first-ever shipment of some wares from Hoppin’ Frog Brewery of Akron, OH. This is a brewery that always seems to fly a little bit below the radar, but it’s not for lack of some very fine beer. Hoppin’ Frog is best known for B.O.R.I.S. The Crusher, their oatmeal imperial stout. (We’re thinking a horizontal tasting of B.O.R.I.S. The Crusher, Terrapin’s Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout, and Founder’s Breakfast Stout.)

HOPPIN’ FROG B.O.R.I.S. The Crusher
HOPPIN’ FROG Hoppin’ to Heaven IPA
HOPPIN’ FROG Mean Manalishi Double IPA
HOPPIN’ FROG Silk Porter

Don’t forget: Asheville Brewing Co. tasting today, 5-7pm!
