Valdez hits #65 on BA

Posted Sep 26, 2008 in Beer, Beer Awards, Breweries, Coolness, Limited Release

We can’t go without posting this bit of news. While perusing BeerAdvocate today, we revisited the BA Top 100 this afternoon and what do we see nesting happily between Saint Arnold Divine Reserve #5 and Parabola by Firestone Walker?

Pisgah Valdez! Holy cow. Congrats, gentlemen. Well done!

The Wee Three

Posted in Beer, Breweries, New this week

Only three additions this week after the deluge of pumpkin and Oktoberfests. But we’re happy to have them!

HARVIESTOUN Bitter & Twisted IPA
LEFT HAND Twin Sisters Double IPA*
SINEBRYCHOFF Baltic Porter

The good news is that Left Hand packaged the Twin Sisters in bomber bottles this year, instead of the cork and cage thing, making the beer much more affordable. Hooray to that!

Props to Mo Daddy’s

After the Stone tasting last night, we had tickets to see Lucinda Williams—who absolutely rocked the Orange Peel with her band Buick 6. But where to get quick(ish) food and a good beer in between? Love ‘em as we do, we can only eat so much Barley’s and Mellow Mushroom. Someone suggested Mo Daddy’s, the sister restaurant/bar/music venue next to Mamacitas and owned by the same person, John Atwater.

Nice little place. We dig it—a couple leather couches, nice bar area, and some blues on the stage. All that’s good, but why did we go? Stone Arrogant Bastard on tap. That’s right! As one of only three accounts in the city to currently have it on draft, we salute Mo Daddy’s for stepping up. The beer fondue was tasty with crunchy bread and the Kobe beef burger was to die for. So, check the place out this weekend if you have a chance.

FYI: Jimbo Mathus (formerly of the Squirrel Nut Zippers) is playing on Sunday night.

Thursday Tasting: Stone Kick-off!

Posted Sep 25, 2008 in Beer, Beer Pairings, Breweries, Coming Soon, Events, People

[EDIT: Something we should noted earlier and in the e-mail notice is that IF you can, please walk/bike/take public transport to the Stone Tasting tonight at Bruisin' Ales. Thanks to Paul at Brainshrub for pointing that out.]

The long awaited day as arrived, friends! Stone Brewing Company is almost here. (Beer spies tell us taps go online statewide on September 17.) Nate of Tryon Distributing will join us TODAY Thursday, September 25 to kick-off a sweet line of some of the best brews from the West Coast. Yet another fantastic addition for North Carolina. Time to celebrate! The cheese pairings today are once again provided by Three Graces Diary.

Stone Pale [American Pale / 5.2% abv]
Stone IPA [American IPA / 6.9% abv]
Stone Ruination IPA [American Double IPA / 7.7% abv]
Stone Arrogant Bastard [American Strong Ale / 7.25% abv]
Stone Oaked Arrogant Bastard [American Strong Ale / 7.25% abv]

You can check the ratings here.

(Sorry, we’re not sampling the Smoked Porter today. That particular beer was on tight allocation for now, so we’re hoarding it. For you, that is. It’s super dee-lish!)

What the hell is going on around here?

Posted Sep 24, 2008 in Miscellany

By now—if you’re a reader from Ashevegas—you know there is little to no gas to be found anywhere. It’s sheer madness out there. Schools are closing. Events postponed. Tourists are scared. Mayor Bellamy is pissed off. The Chamber is going into emergency mode. The City and County are closing Friday and monday to conservePeople are freaked out. We’re freaked out!

After making an attempt at some errands today, I got stuck in gas traffic on a two-lane road just trying to hit a Walgreen’s. Trapped. Turned off engine. After fifteen minutes of sitting, I approached the car in front of me to find a crying person. When I asked how the line was moving, she just looked at me, exhausted, and said she drove from Maggie Valley to Asheville at 5:00 a.m. this morning for gas; this was her fourth stop; and she still had no gas at about 1:00 p.m. I promptly went home to work instead, doing my part in conservation even though I’m sitting on under a quarter tank.

Ashvegas has been frantically blogging all week so far. There’s a Twitter feed on MountainXPress, too.
