Beer ice cream?
If you happen to be in or around Columbus, Ga. today, drop by the Ben & Jerry’s for a very special ice cream tribute to Homer Simpson. “The ice cream, dubbed ‘Duff & D’oh!Nuts’ to fit a Homer Simpson diet plan, has a malted, sweet stout flavor with a cake doughnut swirl.”

Grow a ‘stache for Terrapin
Terrapin Brewing Co. is on a campaign (of sorts) to grow proper mustaches until the brewery receives its brewing license from the state of Georgia. Trust us, we saw Spike and John W. last week for Christmas Jam and it was righteous.

The entire beer list is up-to-date as of today and we’ve started including an “updated on” date to assist you. Today’s gem is the new Flying Dog Wild Dog Collaborator Dopplebock and we’ve been waiting for this one with much anticipation. This is Flying Dog’s Open Source Beer Project, where everyone got to participate in the making of this beer. The coolest part is that you can download the recipe (for all you homebrewers out there) and they even let you reprint the labels. Sweet.

Collaborator Doppelbock was created through Flying Dog’s Open Source Beer Project, which gave amateur brewers a chance to give our brewing team recommendations and feedback on the everything from the grain, hops and yeast to the brewing process itself. We combined your feedback and created a unique Doppelbock recipe to brew up and release.Collaborator has a full body with a sweet malt profile and a slight roast character. The complete recipe and printable labels are available for download at http://www.opensourcebeerproject.com/.

In other Flying Dog news, the brewery announced this week that they are moving all production to Frederick, Md. They’ve been contract brewing there for a time, then bought the brewery about a year ago and now, with an outdated facility in Colorado, they are moving full-time to the East Coast.

Also new this week:
GEARY’S Winter Ale*
MENDOCINO Talon Barleywine*
OTTER CREEK Winter Ale Raspberry Brown*
SCHMALTZ He’Brew Jewbelation 11*
UNIBROUE Ephemere (back in stock)

Oh, the Insanity

There’s not much that’s new this week, but the two that are here are pretty darn special. First up is the second in Southampton’s 750ml series, Biere de Garde. Just in time, too, because this style goes perfect with holidays meals—think pairing with winter spices and hearty flavors. If you like Saison, but never had a Biere de Garde, give it a try. Some loosely refer to these as “super-saisons” because they are brewed in the same farmhouse tradition. In most cases, though, they are slightly darker in color and the alcohol is more prevalent. Other in-store biere de garde favorites include Gavroche, a feisty red French farmhouse ale; Oro de Calabaza by Jolly Pumpkin; Jenlain Ambrée; and the holiday La Choulette de Noël.

Next up is a personal favorite—Weyerbacher Insanity. If you’ve enjoyed their barleywine, Blithering Idiot (quite possibly the best beer name ever), you will love Insanity. Insanity is their sweet barleywine aged in oak bourbon barrels. Holy geez. This stuff is a sipper at 11.1% abv and it warms you up like a fine cognac or brandy. There is only word to describe this beer and that is “yum.”

Thursday Tasting: Pisgah, 5-7pm

Posted Dec 12, 2007 in Beer, Breweries, Events, Goings on

Whoo! We’re excited to have our friends from Pisgah for tomorrow’s tasting. They’re bringing a bruisin’ line-up, too.

Pisgah Porter ”Five organic malts are blended and balanced by a single addition of whole leaf Chinook or Nugget hops. This darkest of Pisgah beers is rich and smooth.” [American Porter/6.0%abv]

Pisgah Equinox ”Brewed strong, this harvest style ale celebrates the bounty of the fall season. Amber in color and well-hopped.” [Harvest Ale/7.5%abv]

Pisgah Red Devil ”This 8% Belgian ale was brewed to commemorate Pisgah’s 200th batch. Packed with over 1# of cherries and raspberries per gallon, the Red Devil balances delicately beteween tart and not too sweet.” [Fruit Beer/8.0%abv]

Pisgah Solstice ”Pisgah’s year-round Belgian. A Tripel ale, this beer contains moderately fruity esters with an alcoholic complexity supported by a soft malt character. This beer is pale gold in color.” [Tripel/9.0%abv]

Pisgah Baptista ”This Belgian Noël takes it’s name from Jan Baptista van Helmont (1579-1644), the Flemish chemist and physician who first discovered CO and coined the word “gas” by recognizing the existence of gases distinct from air. This energy luminary was the founder of pneumatic chemistry and also the first to bridge alchemy and early chemistry. Hats off to the man behind the bubble. Proost and Happy Holidays!” [Belgian Strong Dark/11.0%abv]
