Diageo Plc. wants to move the original Guinness brewery from its beautiful 250-year-old St. James Gate home along the river in Dublin to … wait for it … make room for the building boom that is already pushing Dubliners and small businesses out of the city, making it basically unaffordable. Well, that’s fine, well and good, but what about the simplest of issues—the history? One of us (me) has had the pleasure of seeing (and drinking in) this brewery and can we just say: We are sick about this.
From Bloomberg.com:
The 64-acre (26-hectare) site, which also houses a seven-storey visitor center and bars, has grown 16-fold from the original property Arthur Guinness acquired on a 9,000-year lease. If sold, it would join the Irish Times newspaper headquarters and Dalymount Park football stadium among landmarks that have been bought to feed a decade-long property boom that has seen home prices and office rents in the capital quadruple.
BA’ers already start the debate.
