Kerkmann takes CBO role @ Four Points Sheraton

A few weeks ago, we told you about Sheraton’s job-by-vote for the world’s first Chief Beer Officer. Well, he’s been appointed. His name is Scott Kerkmann. This job is so significant that he got to ring the opening bell of the NYSE yesterday. So what will he do exactlly?

Scott will act as an independent, part-time consultant for the hotel chain’s newly launched program, Best Brews. In this role, the CBO will be responsible for sharing his in-depth knowledge of the wide world of beer on a monthly blog and help cultivate, curate and promote Best Brews’ offerings at brewery tours, beer festivals, and on bar stools across the country.

According to a USAToday blog, HotelHotSheet, Kermann has also been busy publishing, DRAFT, a magazine for the beer lifestyle. Hey, now we’re talkin’. We’re not just beer ‘drinkers’ or ‘geeks’ or ‘connoisseurs’ anymore–we’re a full-fledged lifestyle. That sounds so sexy!

And it is. We predict this guy is going to kill it, figuratively speaking. It won’t be long before another chain will appoint someone similar. Not only did he just get one of the most coveted jobs in America (7,500 people applied), but he was voted-in by beer lovers, not appointed by winos or martini-sippers in starched white shirts. And we suspect that his appointment will do a lot for his little magazine, so that’s double success for the beer industry. It would be easy to say you’re not jealous of this fellow. But, you are. You’re so very jealous.

Sheraton wasted no time in publishing a teaser list of beers for North America straight away yesterday. Not a bad start at all. There are the obvious candidates: Sam Adams, Brooklyn Lager, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Chimay. But we also see Lindemans and Duvel, which means you should have access to Ommegang (in theory). Fat Tire? Stone? Does that mean you can’t buy Stone or Fat Tire here but you can go stay at the Four Points and get it? Not likely. But it is (maybe) reason enough to stay at this chain when you’re out and about in the world.
